About

Hotspot cattle

Our History

Hotspot started out in 1997 as the result of my dreams as a 11 year old boy. I grew up with a dairy that my grandfather started in the 1970’s. I had always wanted to have my own cattle and was privileged to buy 2 heifers when I was 11 years old, and so Hotspot Holsteins started. As the herd grew I felt it was time to broaden my horizons to the Beef Industry, and in 2006 I bought 14 Boran Embryo’s from Simon Hodgen. 9 Heifers were born out of this batch and so Hotspot Boran started out. Through extensive embryo programmes I only multiplied the best to grow the herd. In 2014  I married the love of my life, Elri, who’s dad, Ockert Werner is also a Boran Breeder and owner of Model Boran stud, also one of the top Boran Stud’s in the country.

Model Boran started out with one bull being bought and was used on commercial cows. Ockert was so impressed by these crosses, that he decided in 2010 to acquire the whole group of 2009 born Boran’s from Simon Hodgen. These animals were primarily born from imported embryo’s from Kenya. The females were intensively flushed and this formed part of the foundation of Model Boran. The next logical step for Ockert was to buy a superior bull. And in 2011 bought the bull Z 06-51 for R1 000 000 – hence the name Mr. Million.

MODEL &

HOTSPOT

We now have the privilege to merge Model and Hotspot and farm it as one stud. For practical (and somewhat sentimental) reasons we have decided to keep the Hotspot prefix. We will forever be grateful to Ockert for the opportunity to work with the great Model cows, and look forward to the bright Hotspot future.
